What is Paint Webster?
Paint Webster celebrates the wonder and immediacy of the art of painting. This annual competition, a program of the Webster Community Arts Foundation, promotes Webster Groves as an artistic community by encouraging artists of all ages from the metro area to paint a Webster Groves scene in 'plein air'. Paint Webster brings together several arts organizations, including the Webster University Art Department, while promoting interest in local fine arts production, encouraging interest in arts patronage and support, and celebrating our community's commitment to the arts.
When is it?
Preparing for its fourth year in 2010, it is held the second Saturday in May and has quickly become an anticipated arts event in our community. Paint Webster will be held on
Saturday, May 8, 2010.
What is 'plein air'?
Plein air (French for "open air") artists paint on-site to capture a scene or landscape. Plein air painting was developed in 19th century France by artists such as Monet, Degas, and Renoir.
How do I participate?
Artists should register and have their painting surfaces stamped at YUCANDU, 20 Allen Ave. in Webster Groves, from 8:00-10:00 am. Artists should bring their completed paintings – and easels on which to display them - to the Monday Club, at the corner of Maple Ave & Cedar, between 3:00 & 4:00 p.m. An Artists’ Reception will be held at the Monday Club from 5:00-6:30, at which time over $1,000 in prizes will be awarded. Paint Webster artists will also have an opportunity to display their work at the Old Orchard Gallery from May 10-17.
